Wetsuit

One of the benefits of having older buddies is the hand-me-downs. Having spent a wonderful few weeks swimming Lake Banook, Charlotte’s confidence in her own ability to swim is growing.

Having a ‘special suit’ that keeps the cold out and helps you float, makes the prospect of spending even more time in the water, that much more appealing.

Thank you, Lila, for your old wetsuit.

Dragon: Keep Clear

In Charlotte’s ongoing effort to read and make sense of English, she has taken to reading every sign or label she comes by, and the little English-speaking girl educated in a French-speaking primary school is coming up with some crackers.

Some of you may remember the Teleporting Teapot from a hilarious game of Pictionary a few months back, but this one nearly caused me to drown!

Charlotte and I were swimming around the Aquago Circulation System on Oathill Lake (shown above), which is used to oxygenate the lake improve the health of the water and support the wildlife that lives there. Basically, it’s a pair of solar panels connected to a small electric motor that drives a propeller that aerates the water beneath the unit.

Anyway, we typically use it as a marker for tracking out from the beach on our Summer swims, and this was the first-time Charlotte agreed to swim with me with no lifejacket, just holding onto my neck instead, riding on my back as we paddled our way out and back.

Naturally, Charlotte’s nerves were up a bit being in such deep water without her floaty and the swishing of the Sungo LX6 only added to the twang of anxiety that was tightening its grip around my neck while we both swam. Then, as we rounded the outer marker, Charlotte said, “DRAGON: Keep Clear!”

I laughed so hard, I nearly drowned right there. “Danger, buddy. The sign says, ‘Danger: Keep Clear’.”
“I knooooowww thaaattt, Daaadddd!!!” she laughed, trying to push my head under the water.
Keep reading everything you see, buddy. You’re doing amazingly well.

About the Oathill Lake Conservation Society

The Oathill Lake Conservation Society is a community-based group dedicated to restoring and maintaining the ecological health and biodiversity of Oathill Lake—even that pesky Beaver who insists on felling every bloody tree on the water’s edge.
