The next morning, we dropped camp, signed out our 17 ft. Penobscot Canoe from the outfitters, and loaded it up the best we could before the rest of the gang arrived. The Mayflies were thick, but we managed a nice bacon and sausage breakfast by the waterside before everyone else arrived from Halifax.
After a few final tweaks to balance the load, and we were off. Jody and Tanya in their kayaks. Us in our fully loaded canoe.
Immediately, we saw snapping turtles basking in the sun, an otter playing in the bullrushes, an osprey gliding overhead, looking for trout, and even a pair of loons.
The lake was a lot calmer this year than it was during the thunderstorms we dodged in 2017, so the paddle across was relatively uneventful.
Arriving at Site 12 on our own private island in the middle of the lake, we all donned our bug nets and set to work colonising our new home.
Shortly afterward, a second canoe pulled up with more friends, Dennis and Tara, and their dog Appa; bringing with them a big blue tarp which would prove essential in the downpour that set in the following day. Oh well, at least there weren’t any bugs.
Two sleeps on the island and a day in the rain which mostly consisted of a few hotly-contested games of crib, a few sneaky beverages for the adults, some Frisbee throwing, great camp meals, and a bunch of great conversations with our pals.
All in all, a lovely way to kick off Summer activities for the year. Summer in Canada is short, so you have got to get out there and get after it.
